IT’S ALL ABOUT TRUST
Our speaker Mr. Roger Cowling is an attorney specializing in estate planning and elder law matters. His talk covered these topics:
•WILL: Must go through probate.
•PROBATE: Court and lawyer estate administration. Very expensive
•LIVING TRUST OR REVOCABLE TRUST: Distributes your property at death but there is no probate and helps manage your property when you are incapacitated.
• CONSERVATORSHIP: Like a guardianship but is for adults and is a court supervised proceeding to appoint someone to act for you upon your incapacity. Expensive, time consuming and court controlled. Usually not necessary if one has a living/revocable trust or power of attorney for financial matters.
•POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR FINANCIAL MATTERS: The appointment of a trusted person to act for you regarding financial matters if you become incapacitated. Avoids a Conservatorship and very important for Medi-Cal planning.
•POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR HEALTHCARE: You decide who makes healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to do so.
This was all very interesting as it is information that we all need to think about. Essentially, it can place your financial & health care matters legally in the hands of people you trust. His talk had hands flying for questions and everyone there learned something. WE HAVE A LOT GOING ON AT HOPE 4 MS
1) December 5th at 9:30 am we will have our annual Christmas Party held this year at Country Waffles. Your breakfast will be paid for and all you need to bring is a $10 gift wrapped without a name for the White Elephant gift exchange. This is a very fun event where you get the opportunity to keep the gift you get or take one from someone else and it can get pretty funny. Mark your calendar.
2) Ann Johnson from the MS Society would like to put on an event for us next year and would like to know what we want. Please give us some ideas!
Friday, November 20th Jerry Mapes is presenting a big music fund raiser for MS at Redding Christian Fellowship Church. There will be a mix of musical performers and what a wonderful way to enter the holiday season. Wednesday the 18th Jerry, Patricia & Sally will be guests on KQMS AM 1400 for the Ray Roberts morning radio talk show at 8 am to promote this event and spread some MS awareness.
